Members of Batumi City Council Leave National Movement

November 27, 2012

Majority of Batumi City Council, which still represents United National Movement, is getting weaker. On November 22, two more members – Koba Zakaria and Mariza Abashidze, left the majority. The latter was director of Batumi Public School # 2. In the past, Mariza Abashidze was deputy head of department for environment and natural resources – subdivision of the Adjara government.

Koba Zakaraia told us on the phone that he had disagreement with the National Movement’s team in the city council for a long time and his decision was not connected with the October 1 election. “I decided to be an independent member of the council. I had my opinions which did not coincide with their views; so I left the majority. Election has nothing to do with it.”

Currently, 12 out of 23 members of the Batumi City Council are members of the National Movement and they still make majority.
