Public Defender-to-be, executive director of Human Rights Center Ucha Nanuashvili announced initiative to increase ombudsman’s authority.

Nanuashvili stated at the session of Human Rights Committee of the Parliament that discussion shall start on the increase of Public Defender’s authority.

The candidate believes investigation shall automatically launch on the cases which will be studied and disclosed by Public Defender.

Besides that, Ucha Nanuashvili thinks Public Defender’s institute shall be adequate to the current situation in the country and shall have authority to independently study cases.

According to Nanuashvili’s evaluation, regional offices of the Public Defender are too weak; they shall become more active and allow local population to receive their better service.

If Ucha Nanuashvili is elected on the position of Ombudsman, he said he would work out human rights strategy for the country.

Nanuashvili said that Human Rights Strategy will assist the Public Defender’s Office to systemize their approaches and estimate real needs of the country in the field.

He thinks the strategy shall work during several years and civil society shall also take part in it.

Nanuashvili believes Ombudsman must be more active and shall closely cooperate with civil society.

Besides, he said at the Committee session that Public Defender shall actively involve protection of human rights of the people residing in conflict zones because mass human rights violations are observed there.

Parliamentary majority supported Nanuashvili’s candidature on the position of Public Defender of Georgia.
