Hunger-strikers in Lanchkhuti Have New Demands – Resignation of President!

December 6, 2012

Nino Mshvidobadze, Guria

Although competition for the vacant place of Lanchkhuti district governor will soon be announced, hunger-strikers are not going to stop protest with the request of interim district governor’s resignation. After a tent was set up in front of the Lanchkhuti district administration, one of the organizers of the demonstrations Gia Pirtskhalaishvili started hunger-strike with the request of president’s resignation.

Several days ago, three more people joined Gia Pirtskhalaishvili and today four people – Gia Pirtskhalaishvili, Vladimer Chkhaidze, Jambuli Kinkladze and Kako Khukhunaishvili - are on hunger-strike in front of the district administration building. A larger tent was set up next to the small one where protesters set up a stove to warm in the cold.

Gia Pirtskhalaishvili said he would continue hunger-strike until his requests are satisfied. His health conditions have significantly worsened lately and it was necessary to call ambulance. Doctor said his blood pressure has lowered and they suggested him to stop hunger-strike but in vain.

“I felt so bad that they called ambulance. However, until my all requests are satisfied, I will not stop hunger-strike,” Gia Pirtskhalaishvili told humanrights.ge.
Below you can read interview with him.

-Did the representatives of the local government meet you? Did you meet chairman of the municipal board or interim district governor?

-Yes they met me. They asked about my health conditions. They know my requests. So, we are not going to stop protest.

-Did the majoritarian MP meet you? As far as we know Temur Chkhaidze does not agree with holding similar demonstrations…

-Mr. Temur arrives here almost every day. Although he does not support the idea of hunger-strike and suggested us several times to stop protest, I repeat again – unless our requests are satisfied, we are not going to stop hunger-strike.

-Does it mean that you do not agree your action with the Lanchkhuti district MP?

-Everyone has right to openly express his opinion and we express our opinion in this way.

-Soon competition will be announced for the vacant position of the district governor and your main request is interim district governor’s resignation which will be satisfied. Will not you stop hunger-strike afterwards?

-Alongside Askurava’s resignation, we also request resignation of the president, to liberate board members from oppression, and resignation of the chairman of the municipal board…

-It is clear that your requests are related with the Lanchkhuti municipal board but do you think that Saakashvili will resign based on your request?

-Why not? He will resign.

-According to the spread information, leader of the parliamentary majority Davit Saganelidze might visit you here. Have you heard about it?

-No, I have first heard it from you. Everybody has right to come here. Let them come and see us.

-And still, how long are you going to be on hunger-strike?

-Until all my requests are satisfied.

MP Temur Chkhaidze commented on the hunger-strike. “I am astonished with this fact. I met him several times. Competition will soon be announced for the district governor’s position and to tell the truth I am confused what they protest.”
