Ambassador Philip Dimitrov congratulates the newly appointed Public Defender

December 13, 2012

On December 10, International Human Rights Day EU Ambassador to Georgia Philip Dimitrov congratulated Mr. Ucha Nanuashvili on his appointment as the new Public Defender of Georgia. The congratulation letter, published by the EU Mission in Georgia, reads:

“Mr. Nanuashvili's long standing commitment to the defence of Human Rights will help to enhance a more effective handling of individual complaints; and will also increase the awareness of human rights among state institutions and Georgian citizens.

The EU is committed to work along with the Ombudsman in a spirit of genuine partnership in order to support and ensure the respect of the human rights.

Background

The European Union is committed in its support of the Public Defender's Office. In May, 2012, a grant totalling €1.2 million was signed. It will directly benefit persons placed in detention centres and other structures such as child-care or psychiatric institutions.

A new package of 15 projects under the European Instrument for Democracy & Human Rights has been launched for a total amount of €1.3 million.
