26 Inmates of Matrosov Prison to Start Hunger-Strike

December 18, 2012
26 inmates of the prison # 9, so-called Matrosov Prison, intend to start hunger-strike to express solidarity with the prisoners Levan and Kakha Terashvilis, Davit Shiukashvili and Shalva Sabashvili. Georgian Party spread information about it.

The party reported that 26 inmates, who were inserted on the list of political prisoners by Human Rights and Civic Integration Committee of the Parliament of Georgia, will join the hunger-strike started by the brothers Terashvilis and Davit Shiukashvili nine days ago.

The prisoners claim it is immoral and incredible cynism if they leave prison and those people, who were their friends and allies in the fight against Saakashvili’s regime, will remain in the custody.

“We fought together; we endured torture, humiliation and insulting together. After the government changed we hoped and believed we would find justice; we believe it is not fair when part of the people detained under one case was inserted in the list of political prisoners and another part was refused to. We appeal to the Human Rights Committee and its chairwoman Eka Beselia to correct this mistake [as they explained it] on December 19,” the statement of the prisoners reads.

According to the Georgian Party, Aleksandre Bibiluri, Vasil Gogoladze, Tornike Molashvili, Nikoloz Kvezereli, Zaza Keinishvili, Zaal Zhvania and others, 26 inmates in total, are going to start hunger strike.

Levan and Kakha Terashvilis, Davit Shiukashvili and Shalva Sabashvili were removed from the list of political prisoners.
