Prisoner Cut off His Ear In Protest

December 25, 2012
Inmate of Gldani prison # 8, sick with grave form of tuberculosis, cut off his ear in protest. The prisoner claims he is placed in the conditions inadequate to his health conditions.

The convicted person was taken to Gldani prison # 8 from Ksani penitentiary establishment for the inmates with tuberculosis. The Penitentiary Ministry clarified that prisoner was moved to another premise due to his security means. Short time ago, the prisoner was an initiator of the protest in the Ksani prison. The prisoners demanded dismissal of the chief doctor and three members of the administration, improvement of nutrition and conditions in the custody. The Ministry satisfied only part of their demands and fired administration members.

The prisoner demands to take him back to the Ksani prison otherwise he intends to injury himself more gravely.

Yesterday, members of the public monitoring group visited the prisoner in Gldani prison. Another inmate of his cell is on hunger-strike because he was also brought from Ksani prison.

Members of the monitoring group recommend to the Ministry of Corrections and Legal Aid to ensure placement of the aforementioned prisoners in the premise where they will receive adequate medical treatment and conditions will not farther aggravate their health conditions.
