Members of the City Council Majority Protest Summon of Council Members to Investigation Agency

February 22, 2013

Majority of Tbilisi City Council protest summoning their colleagues to the investigation bodies during session days.

Mamuka Akhvlediani, deputy chairman of the city council and majority member Sevdia Ugrekhelidze held a briefing in connection with this issue.

According to Akhvlediani, members of the Fraction National Movement have been summoning to interrogation for 4 month already. Today, when the City Council’s meeting was announced, two members from their fraction, Khvicha Sanaia and Gela Omanidze were called to the financial police and to the Prosecutor’s Office.

Mamuka Akhvlediani thinks that their fraction members are summoned to interrogation on on session days on purpose. The aim of this action is to threaten their PMs, oppress them and to interfere in the process of making some important decisions. On that ground, the head of the City Council addressed to Chief Prosecutor and the financial Minister not to call PMs to the investigation agencies during meeting days.

Akhvlediani added that council members Khvicha Sanaia and Gela Omanidze will not appear to the investigation agencies today and they will participate in the session and their interrogation as witnesses should be postponed for next days. Sevdia Ugrekhelidze, the member of the fraction “National Movement” also talked about violation of the procedural law.

According to her, there is a rule to summon people as a witness and it is abrogated. City Council members are summoned to the investigation agencies by phone and they do not know what issues they would be investigated about. Similar fact took place in case of his questioning.

Sevdia Ugrekhelidze stated that she is a real member of local self-government Congress of Euro Council, deputy chairman of the Steering Committee of the Congress and he will inform relevant structures of the Council of Europe about these issues, as well as the monitoring committee, who will visit Tbilisi in near future.
