Majoritarian Candidates Lost Interim Elections Received 5 000 Lari Back

June 11, 2013

Central Election Commission corresponded to Human Rights Center and notified that four majoritarian candidates, who lost interim elections, received 5 000 lari back, which they had transferred to the CEC account before elections.

CEC acquired responsibility to return the money back to losing candidates after the Constitutional Court of Georgia upheld the constitutional lawsuit of Human Rights Center and annulled the provision of the Election Code which obliged the candidate nominated by the initiative group to transfer 5 000 lari to the CEC account as a deposit. This provision did not refer to the majoritarian candidates nominated by election subjects like political parties or election blocks. The candidate could receive the money back if the latter had gained no less than 10% of votes in the election.

After the Constitutional Court passed decision, the majoritarian candidates, who could not gain 10% of votes in the election, received their 5 000 lari back.
