On August 16, a press-conference about the case of Gia Alavidze, author of scandalous video-footage about the convicted people for Sandro Girgvliani’s murder, was held in the conference hall of Human Rights House Tbilisi.

On May 25, 2009 TV Company Maestro released the video-footage in the TV-program Profession Journalist. The footage showed convicted persons for the murder of Sandro Girgvliani enjoying privileges in the penitentiary establishment. Gia Alavidze was author of the footage; he served his term together with the accused people in the same establishment. Alavidze said after the video was aired, he was subjected to psychological oppression and in the end he was charged under Article 180 Part II and IV of the Criminal Code of Georgia.

“Convicted Gia Alavidze is innocent. We studied his case and concluded that the person was prosecuted for political motives and his right to freedom of expression and speech was violated,” executive director of Human Rights Centre Aleko Tskitishvili said.

In February 2013, Public Defender Ucha Nanuashvili met the prisoner and Human Rights Centre’s lawyer Eka Kobesashvili took up Alavidze’s case based on the Ombudsman’s recommendation.

Eka Kobesashvili: “Based on Amnesty and aggregation principle of punishment Alavidze’s charge was reduced to 6 years; he has already served 4 of them. In accordance to the law, he can be early released.”

Human Rights Center officially petitioned to the Chief Prosecutor’s Office and to the Chairwoman of the Human Rights and Civil Integration Committee of the Parliament Eka Beselia to study violations in the case.

The Centre requests the Chief Prosecutor’s Office and the Human Rights Parliamentary Committee to immediately study Gia Alavidze’s case and respond to it in accordance to the law.
