Trial on Bacho Akhalaia’s Case in the Episode of Prison Riot Was Again Postponed

October 2, 2013

Salome Chkheidze

Tbilisi City Court again postponed discussion of the third criminal case against Bacho Akhalaia and other accused for one week. The new prosecutor in the case Ia Darjania requested to postpone the trial for 20 days but the judge reckoned the twenty-day term unreasonable and postponed the week for one week. The defense side also protested the prosecutor’s solicitation and lawyers alleged the prosecutor’s office tries to prolong procedures.

“They follow political instructions. The prosecutor’s office tries not the finish the process before presidential elections,” Akhalaia’s lawyers said.

Before September 19, Prosecutor Revaz Nadoi worked on the case but due to his health problems, Prosecutor Ia Darjania took up the case. Judge gave ten days to her to study the case materials.

Currently, Judge Chkhikvadze partly satisfied the solicitation of the prosecutor and gave one week to Darjania to prepare final statement.

Thus, next trial on the criminal case against Bachana Akhalaia, Megis Kardava, Revaz Charbadze and Davit Chakua will be held on October 7.
