Statement of Nongovernmental Organizations about Strike in the Georgian Railway

November 15, 2013

Georgian nongovernmental organizations express solidarity with the members of the New Trade Union of Workers of Georgian Railway, who went on strike on November 14.

Right to strike is one of the significant constitutional rights of a person and we hope this right of the railway workers will not be restricted and society will be cohesive towards their problems.

We will monitor the entire process of their strike on the ground in order to prevent all attempts to breach legal rights of the railway workers.

We also hope the administration of the Georgian Railway will conduct constructive negotiations with them and meet representatives of the New Trade Union of Railway Workers in order to resolve problematic labor and social-economic issues through dialogue.

We are fully aware that non-stop activities of the Georgian railway have huge importance for the state development.  We believe the dialogue between the employers and employees is the only right solution from the current situation in order to avoid more dramatic developments of the protest.
