Batumi Mayor Resigned

February 5, 2014

Keti Labadze, Adjara

Batumi City Mayor Jemal Ananidze petitioned to the city council with the request of resignation for the second time already. It is not known whether the council will satisfy his petition this time. Jemal Ananidze said he made decision because all his activities on the position were usually connected with a political party.

“I always claimed that I am not member of any political party but people usually associated me with the political party. Society is also confused. Unless the city council satisfies my petition, I will find legal ways to quit a job,” Ananidze said.

Short time ago, information was spread that Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili wanted Jemal Ananidze to resign. Last week the mayor told media that he was not going to resign but suddenly he changed decision.

Several days ago, Batumi Mayor appointed Giorgi Ermakov to the position of the vice-mayor. According to the spread information, Giorgi Ermakov was candidate for the mayor’s position. In his interview with the newspaper Batumelebi, Jemal Ananidze explained Ermakov’s appointment to the position. “Why are you asking about Giorgi Ermakov? You can have questions about any person. You had questions about Zurab Pataraia too but we appointed to the position of the vice-mayor because society trusts and supports him. We decided to give him more opportunities in the local self-governmental bodies.”

Majority of the Batumi City Council claims they will not vote for the resignation of Jemal Ananidze.
