Nongovernmental Organizations Call on the Government to Effectively Protect Rights of Workers at Kazreti Deposit

February 24, 2014

Nongovernmental Organizations Call on the Government to Effectively Protect Rights of Workers at Kazreti Deposit.

Society was informed that workers of Kazreti Ore Deposit have been on large-scaled strike since February 14.

The reason of their protest is low salaries of the employees of RMG Gold and RMG Copper, poor medical insurance package and hard social conditions. They claim conditions and working environment in the deposit do not meet even minimal standards of safe job. Lack of special equipment and uniforms, hard working conditions and unhygienic environment create serious threat to their lives and health.

During collective argument several days before the strike, labor contracts were stopped with 184 employees. The employer breached procedures of dismissing employees from job and also there are questions about real reasons of their dismissal and administration shall make clarifications about it.

Employees of the Kazreti deposit protested poor working conditions, lack of safe job in the same form as employees of other institutions for the past few years.

Considering the fact that workers have clear requirements, the state shall play its role and take responsibility to interfere in the process of collective argument.

The signatory organizations call on the Ministry of Labor, Healthcare and Social Welfare to effectively implement its responsibilities and act as a mediator in the process of collective argument in order to achieve fair balance of interests through negotiation.

We also appeal to the government to substantially review the labor policy and ensure proper and safe labor environment for the employees through establishment of effective monitoring mechanisms.
