Seven Candidates for Gori City Mayor’s Position and Six Candidates for District Governor’s Position

May 25, 2014

Lado Bichashvili, Shida Kartli

According to the data from Gori DEC # 32, seven candidates will fight for the position of the Gori City Mayor and six candidates for the position of the Gori district governor.

On June 15, Gori population will elect city mayor for the first time. The low number of candidates for the position was caused by the seizure of right from initiative groups to nominate candidates for the mayor’s position. If initiative groups had chance to nominate candidates, Nugzar Machavariani would have been one of them. Now he can participate only in the elections of the municipal board as a candidate from the initiative group. Tamaz Makashvili, founder of the nongovernmental organization Gori Hall, took measures in advance and registered political union Unity Hall; nowadays he is a candidate for the position of the mayor.

Kakhaber Ergemlidze is candidate from the political union Georgian Party – Irakli Okruashvili. Election bloc Burjanadze – United Opposition nominated lawyer Mamuka Nozadze for the mayor’s position; Non-Parliamentary Opposition nominated Vasil Butkhuzi; Coalition Georgian Dream - Zurab Jirkvelishvili and United National Movement - Archil Sabiashvili. Labors Council nominated Giuli Mukniashvili for the mayor’s position.

It is first local self-governmental elections for Gori district, where district governor will be directly elected. During years, the elected municipal board members nominated district governors. Political party Salome Zurabishvili-Georgian Way could not select appropriate mayor’s candidate but they nominated Ramzes Mtivlishvili for the position of the district governor. Bondo Vatiashvili is the candidate from the Georgian Party – Irakli Okruashvili; Kakha Toliashvili will represent United National Movement; Davit Oniashvili – Georgian Dream, Raul Gogoshidze – Non-Parliamentary Opposition and Ivane Macharashvili – Burjanadze – United Opposition.

Pre-election campaign is not very active in Gori. However, candidates for the position of city mayor from Georgian Dream, United National Movement and Georgian Party – Irakli Okruashvili meet electorate in the city. Other candidates have not launched their election campaign so far. They are waiting for the party leaders to present them to voters.

Mayor candidates mostly promise electorate to resolve their social problems. However, they make different accents. For example, Kakhaber Ergemlidze from the Georgian Party – Irakli Okruashvili promised retired people to increase their pensions at 50 lari and teachers to increase their salaries at 100 lari. Mamuka Nozadze from Nino Burjanadze-United Opposition claims his rival in the ballot gave non-constitutional promises to the electorate; as for his pre-election campaign, main part of local budget will fund social programs.

Archil Sabiashvili from the UNM promised voters to resolve employment problem. Vasil Butkhuzi from the Non-parliamentary Opposition promised to reduce administrative expenditures, to prohibit bonuses for public servants and to spend the saved money on the promotion of small and medium business companies.

As for Tamaz Makashvili and Giuli Mukniashvili, they have not yet presented their election programs. But, the rest of candidates, who already presented programs, do not have detailed description of the program implementation ways.
