Journalistic Ethic Charter Council concluded that information released in Moambe, main news program of the day at Public Broadcaster on August 6 was discriminative and contradicts both Code of Conduct of the Public Broadcaster and Code of Conduct for Broadcasters; the news was about death of a child caused by negligence of parents.
Moambe underlined that family couple living in Kansas (USA) represented sexual minority, who left their 10-month daughter in the car in 30 degree heat outside.
In its August 8 statement Journalistic Ethic Charter Council states that GPB disseminated discriminative information since it was released with certain stress-points and interpretation.
According to the Council, even the video story from foreign media which was aired in the Moambe, “showed that source of information blames a man in the accident and does not say anything about his sexual orientation.”
“Moreover, neither the whole text indicates that they were homosexual couple. However, GPB underlined their sexual orientation, that creates feeling that tragedy was result of their orientation,” the Council reads and added that Moambe focused only on one accident, which occurred with homosexual couple while in 2013 more than 40 kids died in the USA left in the cars by their heterosexual parents. Number of similar tragedies has already reached 21 in 2014.
The Council believes that releasing information in similar form by the Georgian Public Broadcaster contradicts the Georgian Code of Conduct of the Broadcasters “it is not properly accurate and contains discriminative character.”
Charter Council addresses to the editorial-board of the Moambe at the Public Broadcaster to treat topics related with religion, ethnic and sexual affiliation of a person carefully and with caution.
