Address of Human Rights Center about the Removal of Allegedly Beaten Prisoners to a Closed Penitentiary Establishment

December 30, 2014

Human Rights Center protests removal of those prisoners from the Tbilisi prison # 6 into the Kutaisi prison # 2, who claim that they were victims of torture and inhuman treatment.

On December 16, Human Rights Center held press-conference about alleged torture and inhuman treatment of the convicts.

After the press-conference convicted Tamaz Rasoyan, who is beneficiary of Human Rights Center, was removed from the Tbilisi Prison # 6 into the Kutaisi Prison # 2, which is closed facility. Another six prisoners from his cell were also removed from the prison # 6; allegedly those prisoners were also victims of physical assault and inhuman treatment.

On December 16, Human Rights Center spread two urgent appeals to the Ministry of Corrections and Chief Prosecutor’s Office:

Removal of Tamaz Rasoyan to Kutaisi Prison # 2, who was victim of torture and inhuman treatment during previous years too, violates rights of the prisoner to meet his relative, who lives in Tbilisi and cannot travel to Kutaisi due to financial problems.

Human Rights Center repeatedly appeals to the Ministry of Corrections and Chief Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia to react on the information provided by the prisoners; and also to study the alleged facts of their torture and inhuman treatment. At the same time, the Organization requests to return Tamaz Rasoyan back to Tbilisi based penitentiary establishment, where he will have possibility to meet his relative.
