15 years without drinking water

January 21, 2015

Lela Khechoshvili, Kakheti

Residents of Kurdgelauri village in Telavi district have not supplied with drinking water for 15 years already. They fetch water from the well in the yard of Kviratskhoveli Church.

“Nobody pays attention to us. Why should we fetch drinking water from such a long distance? We stay in queues during hours. We cannot trust the government who claims their priority is to supply every village with water. We have petitioned to everybody but despite their promises, the problem was not resolved yet,” Leila Babukhadze said.

Ekaterine Shatirishvili said the population has officially petitioned to different governmental officials at different times; they petitioned to Kakheti region former and acting governors Giorgi Gviniashvili, Zurab Tchiaberashvili, Irakli Shiolashvili and to the administration of the majoritarian MP Gela Samkharauli.  The villagers petitioned to the Kakheti regional office of the Ltd United Water-Supply Company of Georgia, former head of the Telavi service center Aleksandre Shatirishvili who is now Telavi district governor. None of the aforementioned officials resolved the problem.

“They replied to our petitions and promised to address the problem. They say the water is released in the pipe but it cannot reach us. They never answer our questions properly. We have petitioned a lot people; we have not had water supply for years but they make us pay bills. In summer, we were so much bothered with the problem that local government brought water with reservoirs to us,” Manana Javakhishvili said.

Village governor Guram Bakhurauli told Human Rights Center that Kurdgelauri village does not have drinking water reserve, so the population is supplied from Telavi.

“Kurdgelauri village is supplied with the drinking water from Telavi. As for the bills, water supply meters are installed and nobody makes them pay extra money.

“We have divided the village in four districts. So people are supplied with the drinking water once in four days. If Telavi supplies us once in two days, then each district has to wait eight days for the water.

It is planned that the village received drinking water every day. The project is already launched, which was partly implemented two years ago. It is important that the project renewed now in spring,” village governor Guram Bakhurauli said.

He added that two reservoirs will be constructed in summer and afterwards the water supply will be improved in the village.

Human Rights Center contacted Telavi district governor Aleksandre Shatirishvili but he said he was not informed about the problem in the village.

Kurdgelauri village is one of the biggest villages in Telavi municipality with 1 486 families and 5 000 inhabitants in it. They request to finalize the installation of water-supply system which was launched during previous government.
