Statement of CSOs about Alleged Premeditated Assassination of Yuri Vazagashvili

January 21, 2015
On January 20, Yuri Vazagashvili was killed as a result of the explosion on the grave of his son in Karapila village, Kaspi district. The tragedy terrified the Georgian society.

Reportedly, the prosecutor’s office started investigation into the tragic fact under Article 109 of the Criminal Code that is premeditated murder under aggravating circumstances.

Civil society organizations call on the relevant investigative agencies and the government to ensure prompt, impartial and effective investigation into the fact.

During several years Yuri Vazagashvili requested punishment of the clients and implementers of the special operation near the so-called tennis courts in Tbilisi on May 2, 2006 where his son Zurab Vazagashvili was killed.

Therefore, considering the high public interest into the case, it is essential to conduct impartial and professional investigation into the alleged premeditated murder of Yuri Vazagashvili.

The undersigned CSOs express deep concern about tragic death of Yuri Vazagashvili and offer our condolences to his family.
