Resident of Variani village speaks about abuse of power by police officers

March 11, 2015

On March 9, at about 22:00 officers of Variani village police unit of MIA arrived at the Zubashvilis’ family in Variani village and asked Genadi Zubashvili to accompany them to the police station.

“They entered the house aggressively and demanded to follow them to the police station; when I asked them the reason they said they would find out everything in the office. I grabbed a pole but they tried to take me away by force; they struck me in the waste several times, I escaped them and hid in the garden,” Genadi Zubashvili told humanrights.ge.

“They broke into the house; children got afraid and started crying. The police asked questions about my son, who died of starvation three years ago. Three years have passed and do they investigate it now? They asked what was the reason of his death and I replied the child died of illness and starvation,” Genadi Zubashvili’s wife Khatuna Siranashvili said.

On March 10, representatives of the Shida Kartli office of Human Rights Center arrived in Variani village to study the situation on the place. They found out that police had again summoned Genadi Zubashvili to the office and he arrived there together with the HRIDC representatives. However, he was told at the police office that nobody had called them there.

Lawyer of the Shida Kartli office of Human Rights Center Elza Kerdikoshvili said the organization monitors the case and will appeal to MIA to start investigation into alleged abuse of power by police officers.
“There was no urgent necessity to take Genadi Zubashvili to police station. Police officers could hand notification to him and Zubashvili would appear there next day. Besides, the police officers had not clarified with regard to which case they were taking Zubashvili to the station. We request to start investigation into this case,” said the lawyer Elza Kordikoshvili.

Public Relation Department at MIA reported that prosecutor’s office had sent notification to the MIA to start investigation into the death fact of the Zubashvili’s child in 2011. The MIA press center did not confirm information about abuse of power by police officers in the village.
