“Recently, Georgian media sources actively reported about Kist young people who leave Pankisi Gorge and go to participate in the armed conflicts in Iraq. The Council of Elderly Women has been trying to attract the attention of the state institutions and media to this problem. It is one of the most significant issues not only for our gorge but also for every Georgian citizen. The Council is ready to continue work the community with enthusiasm and attract more women and mothers to the struggle against violence and conflict. We do not want this problem to get of larger scales and undermine security of our citizens and stability of the country,” the statement of the Council of Elderly Women was published on April 29.

150 women united to fight against migration of youth from Pankisi to Syria. They established movement “Mothers from Pankisi to Save Children.” Humanrights.ge interviewed head of the Council of Elderly Women in Pankisi Gorge Guliko Khangoshvili about the statement.

Guliko Khangoshvili said the purpose of their statement is to combat young people from Pankisi to leave the country.

“Parents promised us to take more care of their children. After we disseminated the statement, nobody has left for Syria,” Guliko Khangoshvili said.

Khangoshvili requested the government to support them to increase control on the border for juvenile passengers. She said the government should promote employment and education of youngsters, and also should arrange modern sport grounds and halls in the villages.

“Young people have many problems because they do not have jobs. We could not estimate exact number of young men, who have gone to Syria. About ten young men from Pankisi gorge died there; among them was one Chechen man, whose corpse was brought here two years ago,” Guliko Khangoshvili said.

Senior advisor at the State Ministry for Reintegration Meka Khangoshvili said it is impossible to bring bodies of ten young man killed in Syria to Pankisi Gorge.
