Human Rights Center Requests Impartial and Timely Investigation into the Physical Abuse of Citizens

May 18, 2015

Tomorrow, on May 19, at 12:30 pm Human Rights Center will hold press-conference about the recent facts of physical abuse of citizens by police officers in the Pres-Club of the Reporter.

Human Rights Center is concerned with the increased appeals of citizens to the organizations about their physical abuse by police officers. At the press-conference the Center will present the information about illegal activities against Tornike Margiani and Aleksandre Akhalkatsi by police officers.

Nata Tarkhan-Mouravi reported to Human Rights Center that on March 28, police officers ruthlessly beat her son Tornike Margiani in the Old Tbilisi Police Unit # 3. Namely, they took him to the room on the right in the police office, where no video-cameras were installed. Margiani was seated on the iron chair. Four police officers beat him in the legs, head, face and body. The chair broke because of the beating. After beating, Tornike Margiani was placed in the temporary detention setting.

Examination protocol issued by the personnel of the temporary detention setting of the MIA, the detainee had injuries on the body.

Aleksandre Akhalkatsi reported that on May 9, police officers in plain clothes ruthlessly beat and insulted him and his friend in Guramishvili Avenue. The police officers beat him in the legs and waist. Aleksandre Akhalkatsi managed to record the state numbers of the police officers’ cars.

According to Akhalkatsi, police officers work for Gldani-Nadzaladevi police office. He can recognize all of them.

Human Rights Center calls on the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs and prosecutor’s offices to promptly investigate the crimes committed against citizens, to punish every person who somehow participated in the physical abuse of Tornike Margiani, Aleksandre Akhalkatsi and his friend.

Human Rights Center calls on the Human Rights and Civic Integration Committee of the Parliament of Georgia to conduct effective parliamentary control over the investigation into the abovementioned incidents.
