International Human Rights Summer School

May 18, 2015
 Program Description

3-13 August, 2015, Bilgi University, Istanbul, Turkey

International Human Rights Summer School is an unique 10 days training and educational program, designed to equip young Abkhaz, Georgian and Ossetian human rights advocates and activists with a strong grounding in International Human rights Law and practices, so that they become multipliers (trainers, lecturers, activists and decision makers) and advocates of human rights, both in the formal and non-formal sector in their respective regions.

Facilitated by international expert practitioners and trainers, participants will acquire knowledge of European and international human rights standards with an emphasis on human rights in conflict settings, migration and minority rights. More specifically, the courses will touch upon the international and regional legal frameworks for the protection of human rights and the challenges associated with their implementations. The courses will also look closely into human security and human development issues relating to minorities and displaced populations.

The program is divided in two main modules:

Human Rights Law: This module will cover the foundations in international human rights law, provide the insight into the regional and international Human Rights treaties, institution and protection mechanisms. Emphasis will be made on the human rights protection and monitoring mechanisms, including in regions which are not parties to human rights treaties or human rights organizations. Participants will familiarize themselves with the work of such human rights institutions as UN, OSCE, CoE, ECHR, Ombuds institutions, etc.

Equality and Ant-Discrimination: This module will cover the protection of minority rights under international law, including international norms and institutions for the protection of minorities. It will address the rights of national, ethnic and religious minorities as protected under international legal systems. Participants will debate the challenges of protecting "new" minorities (such as migrants) as opposed to "old" minorities and explore different conceptual approaches on human rights, peoples' rights, self-determination, autonomy and minority rights - as well as the link between non-discrimination and minority rights.

The project is partnered  by the High Commissioner on National Minorities of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE HCNM) through funding of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Austria and Germany.

Participants:

Young Human Rights Defenders, lawyers, civil activists (up to age 30)

We strongly encourage ethnic minorities to apply for the summer school.

Language Requirement: Russian and/or English

Interested candidates should send CV and letter of motivation to: ninotlashadze@gmail.com until 4 June 2015. Interviews will be conducted in the second week of June 2015 by OSCE HCNM.
