Juvenile on Hunger Strike In Kutaisi Prison

June 16, 2015

Shorena Kakabadze, Kutaisi

In Kutaisi prison N2, 14-year-old S.T. started hunger-strike for the second time for the last month. The reason is protest against Georgian law enforcement officers, in particular against Samtredia District Police and the Prosecutor’s Office.

“This is second protest of this child this month. First time he started hunger-strike on June 4, but he stopped on June 7 because of heavy health conditions. He has claims against the prosecution, namely against the District Prosecutor’s Office of Samtredia. This is about the fabricated case, which the prosecution created based only on victim’s testimony and by fabricating the factual evidence,” – says the lawyer of the teenager, Ilia Janelidze.

Samtredia District Prosecutor’s Office charged the teenager for the robbery that took place in Samtredia, on March 19, 2015. According to the lawyer, the only evidence that the prosecution holds is the victim’s testimony, who has health issues, namely the mental problems.

“Even without any expertise, you can understand that this person [victim] has mental problems. Also, this person has vision problems. The judge asked the victim his name and he could not answer. You can judge the rest by yourself,” the lawyer Ilia Janelidze told to humanrights.ge.

The lawyer and the family members hope the court will not consider the evidence of the prosecutor’s side and issue fair judgment.

“Otherwise the child is going to die. The prison will destroy his future and trust in the justice in this country. There is a possibility that he might really end up as a criminal and become a threat to society, as well as to himself. In my opinion, it is worth to think about this. It is worth to start objective investigation of this case,” – said the relatives of the teenager.

Humanrights.ge contacted the representatives of Public Defender in Imereti. Trustee of the ombudsman in Kutaisi, Madona Basiladze said she will review the case and visit the juvenile in the prison.

The hearing on this case is scheduled in Samtredia District Court on June 17.
