On November 22, the counter-terrorist center of the State Security Service arrested Davit Borchashvili, 29, resident of Pankisi Gorge, in the Tbilisi International Airport under the charge of supporting terrorism. Investigation was launched under Article 328 of the Criminal Code of Georgia - Accession to the terrorist organization of a foreign state or to such organization controlled by a foreign state or assisting it in terrorist activities. Tbilisi City Court sentenced Borchashvili to pre-trial detention.

“Davit Borchashvili is accused of accession to the terrorist organization, participation in its activities and conducting operations to support and promote the operations. Since the accused could not appear at the court due to health problems, the Court held hearing outside the court building in the O. Gudushauri National Medical Center.

During the closed hearing, the Court considered and satisfied the solicitation of the Chief Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia about imposing pre-trial detention to the detainee because Borchashvili is accused of particularly grave crime that is punishable by imprisonment from 12 to 15 years in length. There is well-grounded assumption that if the detainee is not arrested, he might hide from the investigation and court, continue criminal activities and hinder obtain of evidence,” the statement of the Tbilisi City Court reads.

Pre-trial session into the case is scheduled at 15:00pm on January 13, 2016.
