Adeishvili Sentenced to Imprisonment in Absentia

Former prosecutor general of Georgia Zurab Adeishvili and former minister of security Vano Merabishvili were charged of the abuse of power for illegal seizure of Akura wine factory from the owner in 2004. Chief Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia reported about it.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, Judge Giorgi Arevadze fully satisfied the solicitation of the prosecutor’s office and sentenced former prosecutor general and minister of justice Zurab Adeishvili to imprisonment in absentia. As for the second culprit of this case, the former Minister of National Security Ivane Merabishvili a preliminary case hearing was scheduled for January 12, 2016.
   
“As is well known to the society, Zurab Adeishvili and Ivane Merabishvili are suspected in abuse of power at work, and in systematic crime committed in 2004, which was directed towards forceful appropriation of other citizens’ property, and in which were involved and acted in accordance to previously agreed scheme the law enforcement bodies of the time and the National Bank and as a result of the latter the Telavi Akura Wine Factory was forcefully appropriated from the victims Teimuraz Megrelishvili and Nodar Modebadze,” the statement of the prosecutor’s office reads.

The case is being investigated by the Georgian Main Prosecutor’s Office department of investigation of crimes committed during the case investigation process and the criminal fact of this case is the abuse of power at work which is punishable in accordance with Georgian Penal Code Article 333 by incarceration for a period of from 3 up to 5 years.
