At the March 4 session of the Gori City Council member of Irakli Okruashvili’s political party Ilia Metreveli was elected to the position of the council chairman. 13 out of 15 members of the Council attended the session. As a result of secret ballot Ilia Metreveli gained 10 votes. Member of the Burjanadze – United Opposition Zurab Rosebashvili was elected to the position of the deputy chairman of the Council. Members of the Coalition Georgian Dream supported election of the opposition members on the leading positions in the Council.
“In fact, the Council was functionless. The fraction members nominated my candidature and the majority of the Council members supported me,” Ilia Metreveli said.
The City Council elected Zaza Mezvrishvili to the position of the chairman of the commission for property management and natural resources; on February 5 he was one of those six chairmen who were fired by the Council members through elections. Papuna Koberidze, former chairman of the city council, was elected to be the chairman of the commission for space planning and infrastructure issues. Nino Zurabishvili became chairwoman of the fraction Georgian Dream.
Council member Tamar Tedliashvili said it is political bargain in the Council.
“Georgian Party and the Coalition Georgian Dream made a deal. Election of the member of the Georgian Party to the position of the Council Chairman and member of the Burjanadze’s political party to the position of the chairman deputy demonstrates everything,” Tamar Tedliashvili said.
“Today there is complicated situation in the city council. So it was the best solution in similar situation. We are fully aware of our responsibility before our city population,” chairwoman of the fraction Georgian Dream Nino Zurabishvili said.
