On March 17, exhibition “Generous Samaritan from Markowa” was held in the National Library of the Parliament of Georgia; the exhibition was dedicated to the Polish Ulma family of. In parallel to that, on the same day, museum of the Ulm family was opened in Poland.
On March 24, 1944, fascists shot Joseph Ulmas and his family members for sheltering the eight-member Jewish family.
The Ambassador of Poland in Georgia Andrzej Cieszkowski and other representatives of the Embassy attended the exhibition. Representatives of the diplomatic missions of Romania, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Czech Republic and Turkey, clergymen and representatives of local NGOs also attended the opening of the exhibition.
“Today is the day of the Ulmas Family. In parallel to this exhibition, museum of the Ulmas Family is opened in Poland. With today’s exhibition and example of Polish people we want to show to young generation what tragedy people had overcome and call on them to combat similar tragedies in future,” Marine Solomnishvili, head of the international foundation Lea, said.
The Dean of the Humanitarian Faculty at the Tbilisi State University Guram Lortkipanidze spoke about the Ulma Family and support of the Polish people.
At the end of the opening ceremony, the Ambassador of Poland to Georgia Andrzej Cieszkowski said the generous act of the Polish family shall be a good example for the entire world.
