A new project of Human Rights Center –Monitoring of 2016 Parliamentary Elections and ICC’s investigation in Georgia

August 29, 2016
Human Rights Center in the partnership with the Norwegian Helsinki Committee commenced the one-year project – Monitoring of 2016 Parliamentary Elections and the International Criminal Court’s Investigation in Georgia.

The project aims to promote establishment of fair and transparent pre-election environment in the country and monitor the elections’ process in Georgia; in addition, the project strives to effectively protect the rights of the victims of 2008 August War, to build capacity of lawyers and journalists about the mechanisms of the International Criminal Court, so that they will not hinder or damage the ongoing investigation process.

Human Rights Center and the Norwegian Helsinki Committee will observe the 2016 Parliamentary Elections in the so called border villages in Shida Kartli and Imereti regions; also, in the villages of ethnic minorities in Kvemo Kartli and Kakheti regions. The violations observed during the monitoring of the pre-election period and the Election Day will be reflected in the report, which will be produced in Georgian and English languages. The report will be distributed among local and international organizations.

The second aspect of the project aims to raise the awareness of the society about the investigation into alleged war crimes committed during the 2008 August War in a way that interests of investigation are not damaged. International experts will conduct trainings and workshops for the lawyers and journalists, so that their activities on local level will be more productive, coherent with the interests of victims and investigation process. The representatives of Human Rights Center and Norwegian Helsinki Committee will actively work to defend rights and interests of 2008 War victims.

Implementation of the project was made possible with the financial support of the Norwegian Helsinki Committee.
