Ministry of Corrections Ordered to Pay 25 000 GEL as a Compensation to the Prisoner

March 24, 2018

The Tbilisi City Court satisfied the claim of Human Rights Center and ordered the Ministry of Corrections of Georgia to pay 25 000 GEL as a compensation for moral damage to the prisoner, who is victim of torture and inhuman treatment.

Human Rights Center defends interests of the convicted G.J, who was found victim in two criminal cases for being tortured and inhumanly treated from the side of prison personnel in 2008-2011. For years, G.J was subject of inhuman treatment and torture in prison that significantly affected his health.

Convicted G.J appealed the court to claim the compensation for the damage and HRC lawyer Eka Kobesashvili defended his rights in front of the court.

Human Rights Center believes that all crimes committed by government or public officials shall be punished. Restoration of the victims’ rights and their rehabilitation shall be done through fair trial.

Human Rights Center calls on the Ministry of Corrections to support all attempts of the victims of torture and inhuman treatment to claim the rehabilitation and satisfy their reasonable claim on the compensation for material and moral damage.
