On June 28, the HRC executive director Aleko Tskitishvili and the coordinator of the environmental programs at the CENN Rezo Getiashvili met the school children participating in the summer camp at the Bulachauri Green Center and discussed the campaign Swim Safe with them.
The pupils watched the investigative film of the Studio Monitor “Death Zones in Georgia.”
The discussion was about particularly dangerous places on the water bodies in the regions of Georgia, where people drown every year, most of them are children.
The pupils spoke about the dangerous places on the water bodies in their regions, where several tragedies happened in the past years. They particularly underlined the following places: artificial recreation zones alongside the Black Sea Coast; lack of rescue teams on the Basaleti Lake, Tbilisi Sea, Zhinvali and Sioni Water Reservoirs and dangerous places on the embankments of the Rivers – Alazani, Iori and Aragvi.
The participants noted that the local municipalities shall study all tragic accidents and acknowledge their responsibilities to ensure safety on water bodies.
The students planned action-performance near the so-called waterfall in the territory of the Tbilisi Sea, where the Aragvi River joins the Tbilisi Reservoir. For years, several people drowned there, among them were adults. Nevertheless, the Tbilisi City Hall does not install warning banners in the area. The participants of the summer camp planned to install the banners with their own resources.
