Advocates in Gori Speak About Repression

Mamuka Nozadze, who was detained for hooliganism three months ago, asks political parties and NGOs for help. According to Nozadze, the Gori Prosecutor’s Office is putting pressure on him. The Prosecutor’s Office accuses Mamuka Nozadze and Manana Mazanashvili of appropriating 150 laris each.

The facts are, according to the prosecutors’ information, advocates Mamuka Nozadze and Manana Mazanashvili told their client Zhenia Vartapetian to pay 2000 laris. This money was to secure the release of her son on bail but was to be paid not to the account of prosecutors’ office but to their own private account. Vartapetian, who also has a statement from the bank, blames the advocates for appropriating 300 laris from the bail amount. Furthermore, she notes that she followed the advocates’ directions.

The preliminary investigation of the criminal case, launched against advocates Mamuka Nozadze and Manana Mazanasvili, has now ended. The case was then sent to Mtskheta - Mtianeti court for consideration.

Mamuka Nozadze claims that he is illegally imprisoned because law enforcers do not have the evidence to prove his guilt. “How could I manage to extort this money when I was not even Vartapetian’s advocate? Her advocate was Manana Mazanashvili. Why am I detained?”- askes Nozadze. He has already applied to the public defender’s office as well as the Committee on Human Rights and Civil Integration in the Georgian Parliament, but so far in vain.

The advocate blames Shida Kartli prosecutor, Mikhail Abuladze, for his arrest. The old friends opposed each other on August 9, 2005, when Abuladze was moved to the position of Shida –Kartli district prosecutor. “Abuladze asked me why the price for my services was so low. He also asked to supply him with compromising materials against the governor. Mikhail Abuladze opposed me when I was interrogated at the General Prosecutor’s Office about the torture of Ketevan Maisuradze. This woman was physically assaulted at the prosecutor’s office in the presence of Abuladze. I was also there because I was protecting her son. I am also the advocate of another person, Mariam Mariamidze, a former investigator at Kareli investigation department, who was arrested by Abuladze. It seems that I was a serious obstacle for the prosecutor as an advocate, that is why decided to get rid of me”, stated Mamuka Nozadze in court.

Shida Kartli District Prosecutor Mikhail Abuladze says that Nozadze is accused of different illegal acts and that the investigation will in time reveal all the facts.
