Abandoned Population and Fraudulent Promises

December 19, 2006

adigeni.pngResidents of the village of Dertseli in the Adigeni District, have been waiting for the assistance from the government for a year already. The people, who are living in the zone, damaged by the landslide, continuously face danger.

The village of Dertseli is situated 1,640 meters high from the see level. It is 25 kilometers away from the regional centre. 72 families live in the village and the total number of inhabitants is 600. Even in March, the snow reaches 70 or 80 centimeters. IDPs from Adjara live there who were settled from the village of Khulo.

Last year, constant rain particularly damaged the inhabitants of Dertseli. The silt is threatening to destroy the houses.

“The hill was dismantled by rain and the stones pushed the house forward. It was dangerous to stay in it," said Bezhan Vanadze from the village of Dertseli.

"In the morning, my house shook and I was scared. I could not open the door. I went to the back of the house and saw that it was locked by the mud and sand. I was too scared and left the house immediately," said Aisha Vanadze, a housewife.

The ten member family of Bezhan and Aisha Vanadzes was sheltered by their neighbor.  They have been living there for a year already.

"Because of their promise, I hoped that government would help, but a year has already passed since then," said Vanadze.

Most of the houses in the village are in the same conditions.

"The families of Shavadzes, Beridzes, Mikeladzes live in danger of the landslide.  The land is moving there. The people have petitioned the government several times in vain," said Sergo Bitsadze, who lives in the village.

Although, the village of Dertseli is declared to be a dangerous place, it did not have any effect on the people.

"The houses have lowered in three meters what is caused by land movement. It is absolutely impossible to live here," said Gela Aghlemashvili, the main Architect of the Adigeni District.

Ten-year-old Tiniko Vanadze does not want to stay in the damaged house. "I am afraid," says the scared girl. "I want a house on the flat place," that is the dream of the girl. She cannot go to school either, because the school is also damaged. The floor and ceiling both are damaged. "The rain leaks in the school building and parents cannot send their children there," mentiones Shukri Mikeladze, principal of the school.

Aleksandre Sukhiashvili, the chairman of the Adigeni Administrative Board, said that the poor budget of the district cannot resolve this problem. “We urged the central government for help and now we expect for the money transfer,” he said.

People from the village of Dertseli do not believe that promises will be kept, however, they do not have any other way out…and they are waiting…”
