Controversy between a Student and Lecturers at the University

January 16, 2007

students.gifMagda Kldiashvili is a student for the journalistic faculty at the Tbilisi State University (TSU) Akakhaltsikhe Branch. She blamed the board of the University for violating her rights and stated that she was deceived.

“They made me a liar, and put me to shame in front of everybody. They told me I had to repeat a course. I do not want to take the course again, because I have already learned the material for that course and demand to take an exam at the TSU Georgian Language Faculty. I will never take the same course,” Kldiashvili is too categorical in her demands.

The girl has complaints with the new director of the Akhaltsikhe University and dean of the faculty. The incident started when Kldiashvili was invited to Leaders’ School for her activity in Patriot’s Camp (President’s summer program).

“Officials from the Leaders’ School asked me to produce a recommendation from the university. I asked Shota Zazashvili, the director of the TSU Akhaltsikhe Branch to give a recommendation. He asked the dean of my faculty, Gulkan Kurasbedian, to write a recommendation letter for me. I knew that I would not have any problems for those lectures I had missed. I have passed all A category exams with high grades. Before I went to the camp I expected I would have problems about my grades and thus I would not have a scholarship. However, everything has changed now,” said Magda.

Kldiashvili has to pay 375 GEL to resolve the problem and to repeat the course, too. There are many vague things for her in this incident.

“Having returned from the Leaders’ School I found out that I had missed two-thirds of the lectures. Thus, I have to repeat the course, which I protested because my group-mate, Lela Kldiashvili had also missed the same number of lectures; however she was allowed to the exams. The dean blamed me for not having a sense of friendship and teamwork,” said Magda.

Kurasbediani categorically denied the Kldiashvili’s accuses and he said that Magda was aware she would have problems; however, she had made that choice.

“Magda Kldiashvili asked us to give a recommendation letter to her to produce to the Leaders’ School and we gave her. Besides that we explained her that she would have problems. It turned out she had missed the two-thirds of her lectures. She has to take the subjects once more and subsequently has to pay money, too. It is envisaged by the law and the University regulation. The director and I explained her several times,” said the dean.

The student claimed the opposite. “I met Zazashvili three times and we never spoke about these problems at all. If they had explained me everything, I would not have had such a big problem now. I would not have gone anywhere. The dean clearly told me that they would make noted I was missing lectures, and I would have no more problems regarding the case,” said Kldiashvili.

The girl doubts she is punished for having taken active part in the protest demonstrations against the detention of former director of the Akakhtsikhe University, Merab Beridze. However, this argument is categorically denied at the university.
