IDPs Will Not Be Evicted Anymore

September 27, 2007

The scandal about hotel “Kutaisi” that attracted public attention, ended with peaceful agreement. The board of the Interinvest Ltd satisfied the demand of IDPs residing in the hotel and paid them compensations from 4500 to 8000 USD.

“We did not expect this long and complicated situation to end so peacefully. They tried to evict us from here under force but we did not give in. They cut off water and electricity supply, telephone line was also cut in the hotel but we did not give in. Our only demand was to meet the owner of the hotel, the head of the Interinvest Ltd because we hoped that Mr. Badri Kakabadze would not leave us in the street,” said Liana Gabunia, a resident of the hotel.

She and other residents of the hotel have already received compensations and some of them have purchased flats. However, there are people who still remain in half-ruined hotel but nobody forces them out before they buy flats.

“I am glad that the situation in Kutaisi ended unlike other cities of Georgia. You should remember what happened in Batumi (patrol police forced IDPs our form the building and threw out their furniture into street through the windows). Our organization was involved in the process and I have detailed information about it. The board of the Interinvest realized that they should not evict people from the hotel without corresponding compensations and decided to give them enough money and time to leave the building,” said Zurab Khurtsidze, the head of “Sachino” organization to protect IDP’s rights.

There are only 2-3 IDP families in the half-destroyed building now. Soon they will leave the hotel too and all disagreements will remain in memory.
