Members of the “National Movement” Use Administrative Resources to Carry out Election Campaign in Gori

December 7, 2007
Local governmental bodies involved students from Gori in the election campaign of the presidential candidate from the leading party. Besides students the complete personnel of administration takes part in the campaign. Members of the National Movement think that Mikheil Saakashvili will win more votes in Gori district than in other districts throughout Georgia.

On December 5 Youth Organization of the National Movement was established in the Gori Culture and Rest Park. Only few people know how many times the youth organization has been already presented. Davit Kirkitadze, the Secretary General of the leading party, attended the event. They set up the election office which will be led by Lado Vardzelashvili, the Deputy Minister of Sport and Culture. Vardzelashvili thinks that Mikheil Saakashvili will win more votes in Gori than in other districts of Georgia.

Before that Giorgi Martinenko was the chairman of the “Youth Organization”. At the moment Martinenko is fugitive. As far as we know he was physically assaulted twice; once on September 12 when former regional governor Mikheil Kareli and former District Governor Marlen Nadiradze tried to get into the administrative building through the law enforcers siege. On the second time Giorgi Martinenko was attacked in front of the Gori State University and he was severely beaten. Martinenko is brother-in-law of Tamaz Dalakishvili, former Kareli District Governor. The latter himself is the cousin of Irakli Okruashvili, the former Defense Minister.

On December 5 Soso Papitashvili was appointed as a new chairman of the “Youth Organization” who is the son of the head of the Financial-Budget Department within the Gori Municipality. Self-government of the Gori University and great part of students took part in establishing the youth organization. Boba (Robinzon) Davitashvili gave a speech at the presentation. However, as Tako Nozadze, the spokeswoman of the Gori University stated the self-government of the university has not been elected yet and the university does not have any leader yet.

In parallel to it law enforcers still go on with detaining the people. They have arrested Marlen Nadiradze who was released under bail three days later. Marlen Nadiradze was blamed for extorting a TV set from a shop. When law enforcers raided the administration office it exposed that one of TV sets was not registered on the administration. Later it was found out that Nadiradze had seized TV set from a certain shop in the town.

Law enforcers detained Davit Bolotashvili, former governor of the village of Dzevera. He was blamed for stealing bread wheat which was sent to villagers as governmental aid. Oppositionists claim that the government takes well-directed measures to threaten the people opposing the government. ‘They have not finished distributing the bread wheat and how they have concluded that Bolotashvili had stolen wheat,” asked oppositionist Shalva Tlashadze. Bolotashvili was imprisoned.

All in all, National Movement started election campaign cheerfully. The leading party has sent people from the capital to run the campaign in Gori. Lado Vardzelashvili said that Saakashvili would win the elections.
