Batumi Dwellers Are Disappointed with Employment Program

December 14, 2007
On December 10, part of population took turns to the employment centers from the early morning. Unexpectedly they were announced that the employment program will be implemented from February, 2008.
Employment centers opened in different districts in Batumi. The population applied to the centers according to their residential areas. Many of them took turns in the early morning.

“Some of us came here at midnight, others in the morning. Why have they postponed the program until February? Presumably, they are making fun of us. If they do not start now they will never start it in February. That is sheer lie,” said one of the women whom the Human Rights Center interviewed at the Employment Center in Tabidze Street #2.

“My husband is ill and he received some allowances but now the government has cancelled them. I wanted to find some job… There were approximately 500 people in the morning, and then the police officers came and advised us to go home as the program was postponed till February, 2008,” said Valiko Gorgiladze.

“I am 40 year-old and last year when I took part in this program I was sent to one of the enterprises. When I got there, they refused to employs me because of my age. If 40 year-old person is old then why they should not give grant me with pension,” inquired Eka Jincharadze.

“I have arrived from Khulo district. I wanted to work even for 3 months somewhere. I hoped to find something suitable for me. Now it turns out that I have lost 8 lari that I paid for my ticket to Batumi,” complained a woman.

Resan Sharadze demands permanent employment from the government: “We do not want three-month-employment; we need permanent job that will help us to buy bread afterwards too.
