Russian Soldiers Returned to Village of Perevi Village

December 23, 2008

Shorena Kakabadze, Kutaisi

Residents of the village of Perevi in Imereti region, where Russian have since returned, live in the village under constant fear. People state they were not so scared, even when Russians first occupied their village; they added how the return of Russian occupants might cause even more serious problems for them.

Russians still control the village of Perevi in Sachkhere district. Occupying troops have returned back to the village in Upper Imereti region that borders with Ossetian villages. The soldiers reinforced checkpoints again. There are now nearly 150 soldiers, and fewer military vehicles. Now complete control exists over local administrative building, and collectively, this is the current situation in the village.

“We were told that Russians would leave our territory sooner or later and we maintain hope till now. We sent old people and children from the village and expected Russians to leave the village sometime soon but we were a bit calm, as they did not do anything harmful to us. However, the situation has changed, and now we are very worried and confused. Although our family members returned home for now, we have sent them back again to our relatives. We are waiting what will happen. Unfortunately, it is fact that nothing good will happen and everything makes us wait for some pending disaster,” said villagers.

Their fair is reinforced by the fact that Russians started to collect information about locals as soon as they returned. The census of the village residents is going on. However, nobody explains locals as to why the census has been conducted.

“They are recording everything. How many members are in the family but they still do not explain anything to us. We are very afraid and there is nobody who can answer our questions as to what is actually going on here. We just complain about other and that is all that we can do for now. Will anybody tell us what will be in future?” said locals.

Reportedly Russians intend to issue Russian passports to the locals. Men are taken to Ossetia for employment Local governmental officials define that Georgian police does not patrol in village. Zurab Tsertsvadze, Sachkhere district governor, states that Russians are reinforcing their checkpoints and strictly control the border of the village.
Although the schooling process has not stopped in the village school, lessons are not being held because of a shortage of pupils. Only those people who remained in Perevi are those who had no place else to go.
