The Relatives of the Killed in the War Request the State Assistance

February 16, 2009
The inhabitants of Zemo Nikozi and Zemo Khviti say that the government does not pay any attention to them. The population is eager that NGOs help them but they can not understand why the state does not foster the families of the killed in the August war. The people who lost the financial supporters of the family in the recent war are facing extremely difficult situation.

Manana Mchedlidze, the inhabitant of Zemo Nikozi village lost Dmitry Jailava, her son-in-law in the war. Wounded Dmitry died during the transportation from Kopitnari. Manana Mchedlidze found out on his funeral that Amiran Mchedlidze, her husband was shot by Russians in the village of Nikozi. “On August 12, on the funeral of my son-in-law, I was called and told that my husband was shot. Kutiasi was blocked at that time and I could not go to Nikozi. My dead husband was lying on the road for two days. Manana Mchedlidze became ill during the war. Now she is suffering from the disease of joints as a result of nervousness. She can not walk. She asks her associates for money when she has to go to the doctor. “I have been visiting a doctor for one month now with the money my associates give me. Only NGOs help. I have received nothing from the state.” The war had terrible consequences to Manana Mchedlidze. She lost the husband and son-in-law and her 3 grandchildren were orphaned. However, the state does not help her.

“We received only 10 000 GEL from the state. We spent the whole money on funerals of the family members who died during the war. We are asking only for 30 GEL monthly of aid to buy at least bread,” say the associates of the people who died in the August war. Despite the fact that these people live in the villages that are under gun fire every day they do not want to leave their homes.

“I feel very sorry for the civilians who died during the August war. Unfortunately, the state managed to grant only 10 000-GEL compensation to them,” said Zurab Chinchilakashvili, Deputy Shida Kartli Regional Governor. He also said that it is outside the regional government’s competence to allocate monthly  compensations to the victims of war. However, deputy governor said that he would raise this issue in subsequent state bodies.
