Law Enforcers Dispersed Demonstration

March 11, 2009

“Why did you kill Roin Shavadze?” “Murderers of Zura Vazagashvili must be punished,” “Murderers of Sandro Girgvliani must be punished,” these were slogans of the demonstrators in Batumi. However, law enforcers forcefully dispersed the demonstration. The policemen seized video-cameras from the organizers of the demonstration.

Dachi Tsaguria, organizer of the demonstration: “We request punishment of Roin Shavadze’s murderers. Georgian society will not forgive anyone killing of people in the forests with torture. Our government should know it. We appeal to every policeman: brothers, don’t follow Misha Saakashvili into the grave.”

Ramaz Gvarjaladze, deputy head of main department of Adjara Autonomous Republic, took part in the dispersal of the demonstrators together with law enforcers. Gvarjaladze categorically refused to make comments with media sources.

The protest demonstration was organized by the movement “November 7”. Representatives of the opposition party also participated in the demonstration.

The organizers had applied to the City Hall of Batumi on March 4 and informed them about the planned demonstration. The reply of the City Hall on March 5 was “the government has right to stop the assemblage if it contradicts the law. For that purpose, the City Hall informed law enforcement bodies regarding the fact. If you breach the law, you will be charged under administrative or criminal law.”

Nobody was charged today. However, the demonstration, which was not illegal at all, was forcefully dispersed.
