Tents Will Be Set Up in Telavi Too

April 14, 2009

Gela Mtivlishvili, Kakheti

Tents will be set up in Telavi close to the Kakheti regional administration. Ordinary citizens, not representatives of opposition political parties, are going to express their protest in that way. The people are dissatisfied with the activities of the government and with the current injustice reigning in the country. Deputy Chairperson of the Telavi office of the Conservative Party Giorgi Mosiashvili, who participates in the protest demonstrations in Tbilisi, claims that the organization council of the opposition parties in the regions also are discussing the possibility of starting protest demonstrations.

According to verified information an organization group is already set up which is planning to put the first two tents in front of the regional administration in Telavi on Thursday. According to the organization group they will join the demands of the demonstrations in Tbilisi and unless their demands are satisfied the tents will be put in front of the district administration buildings in Sighnaghi and Gurjaani. They stated that  Georgia is not only Tbilisi and the people of the regions also protest the activities of the government.

It was reported to The Human Rights Center that also taking part in the protest are victimized owners of private properties in Sighnaghi who were deprived of their properties in 2007 by governmental officials late at night under threat of imprisonment and under physical force. The former property owners Manana Macharashvili and others confirmed that they would take part in the protest.

To the question: “Do citizens have any right to set up tents close to the Kakheti regional administration and also close to the presidential administration?” Shota Utiashvili, a head of the information-analytic department of Interior Ministry, answered: “I do not know. You should ask the government if the citizens and the opposition have appropriate permission”.
When asked what they would do if the citizens and the opposition picketed governmental institutions in regions, nobody in the Minister of Interior commented.

According to Giorgi Sibashvili, the first deputy of the Kakheti governor, nobody applied to the Telavi municipality for permission to hold the demonstration in the city. The regional administration was not informed about setting the tents up.

If the demonstrations are held in Kakheti, the Kakheti office representatives of NGO Human Rights Center will monitor them.
