Detentions on Political Grounds Continue in Gori

June 16, 2009
Tea Tedliashvili, Gori

Last night, from 11:00 pm to 12:00 pm Zaal Gudadze from Alliance for Georgia and active supporter of this party Tamaz Tlashadze were detained. Davit Razmadze, head of the Gori office of the political party states that shells were discovered on Zaal Gudavadze; and Subotex was found on Tamaz Tlashadze. However, the case-materials do not provide the drug as evidence. The prosecutor’s office demands the detainees to testify their guiltiness and 4 or 5 thousand GEL as bail from them. The state tries to get that amount of money from the detainees.

Gudadze and Tlashadze do not plead guilty. Gudadze is charged under Article 236 of the Criminal Code of Georgia and Tamaz Tlashadze is charged under Article 260 of the Criminal Code.

“We were looking for our friends after 11:00 pm and only at 2:00 am we learned they were detained. Zaali is member of our party and participates in the rallies every day. He had some disagreement with the officers from the Constitutional Security Department. I am sure his activities were the cause for his detention. Tamaz Tlashadze is not a member of our party but he actively supports us; so he was arrested for his favor to our party,” said Davit Razmadze. “Lately, Tamaz has been ill and he rarely left home. Yesterday he went out to buy some mineral water when law enforcers arrested him by twisting his hands. As for Zaal he is a famous person in Gori and his detention aims to threaten citizens of our city,” said Davit Razmadze.

Tamaz Tlashadze was tested on drug-addiction after detention and there was no trace of narcotics in his blood.

Lawyer Revaz Revazishvili and Nino Dalakishvili, representative of the Public Defender’s Office have already met the detainees. Dalakishvili reported that Tamaz Tlashadze was in Aghmashenebeli Street together with his father; they were going home. 40 meters away from their house the law enforcers stopped them, searched Tamaz Tlashadze twice but could not find anything. Later he was searched for the third time as well.

“As Tamaz told me the policemen took out some paper from his pocket during the third search. They did not open it but declared it was narcotics and pushed him into the car. Zaal Gudadze was going home from the funeral of his friend. In Ninoshvili Street a car blocked his road; he jumped out of the car and quarreled with the policemen. During the quarrel he was hit with something blunt. He cannot recall what had happened in fact however he has some bruises on his shoulder,” said Nino Dalakishvili.

The campaign against Zaal Gudadze started long before. His colleagues from the political party stated that initially provocations were planned against his brother Kote Gudadze. Former officer of the CSD offered a taxi-driver to make Kote Gudadze sit in his car and the former officer was responsible for the rest of the plot. Fortunately, the taxi-driver refused to assist him and Kote Gudavadze survived the detention.

The brothers Gudavadzes are famous for their opposition activities in Gori. When eulogy rhymes were read in favor of Mikheil Kareli, former Shida Kartli region governor, in a kindergarten in Gori Kote Gudadze removed his son from the kindergarten in protest.

On June 16 Tina Khidasheli from Republic Party arrived in Gori to support her colleagues from the party. The trial on detainees has not been appointed yet.
