One More Demonstration To Be Held in Gori

June 19, 2009

Tea Tedliashvili, Gori

Because of detention of Zaal Gudadze from Alliance for Georgia and Tamaz Tlashadze, supporter of the same party a rally will be organized in Gori. Members of the Alliance plan to hold the demonstration in the yard of the Gori State Theatre. Members of the local branch of the party hope that Tina Khidasheli and Davit Berdzenishvili from Tbilisi office of their party will join them.

Similar rally was organized in Gori on June 17 too. It started in the yard of the Giorgi Eristavi State Theatre and moved towards the regional police main department. They requested the release of the detainees. However, nobody responded to their protest; as soon as the personnel of the police department saw the demonstrators moving towards them they locked all doors and did not allow people in the building. After a long waiting, the demonstrators were reported that trial on Zaal Gudadze was earmarked and the demonstrators moved to the building of the Gori district court.

Gori district court did not deceive Zaal Gudadze and his supporters and both he and Tamaz Tlashadze were sentenced to two-month pre-trial detention

Judge Nino Jachvadze did not leave the room to write the resolution part of the judgment. She satisfied the solicitation on two-month pre-trial imprisonment without having left the court. Apparently, the judge had prepared the judgment in advance though it should be written after having heard the trial.

“In accordance to the Criminal Procedural Code the judge was not entitled to make decision on the place. The judgment shall be made in five copies that should be distributed among the parties. In any case, the judge had to leave the court room for discussion,” said Giorgi Gotsiridze, UN human rights expert at the Public Defender’s office.

The question of the judge to the accused was very important. “Did law enforcers oppress you or did they use any form of violence against you while detention,’ Zaal Gudadze replied: “No they did not; but at some point they used force against me.”

The judge did not ask anymore questions and she changed the topic of conversation.

Zaal Gudadze was taken to detention setting N 8.
