Silent Demonstration in front of the Former Building of the Embassy of Russian Federation

July 20, 2009
On July 19 the representatives of the South Caucasian Network of Human Rights Defenders organized a silent demonstration in front of the former building of the Embassy of Russian Federation.

Members of the South Caucasus Network of the Human Rights Defenders took part in the demonstration. 30 organizations from three countries (Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan) are members of the network. Anne Tusvik Bonde, representative of the Norwegian Human Rights House, also participated in the demonstration as a partner of the network.

The demonstration was dedicated to the murder of famous Russian human rights defender Natalia Estemirova. The participants expressed their respect to the colleague. Besides that, they protested the silence of Russian society to similar facts by silent demonstration

Ucha Nanuashvili, executive director of the Human Rights Center, said that this fact once more demonstrated that Russia is a country where human rights defenders and journalists face huge risks while implementing their professional activities.

It is important to point out that the demonstration was organized by the representatives of three Caucasian countries. They also demonstrated to the governments of their countries that they are ready to fight for their rights.

Demonstrators also demanded to release Azerbaijan human rights defender Ednan Hajizade and Emin Mill.

Natalia Estemirova was representative of the Grozno office of the human rights organization “Memorial”. She was murdered on July 16. Recently, she was publicly criticizing the governance of Ramzan Kadirov, the president of Chechnya.
