Reply of the Supreme Council of Justice of Georgia

July 22, 2009

Supreme Council of Justice got interested in the article published on our website several days ago. The article “Judge Who Did not Satisfy the Request of the Persecutor’s Office Is Persecuted” was about disciplinary persecution on Giorgi Gogichashvili, judge at the Telavi district court. According to the article, the reason for starting disciplinary persecution on the judge was his decision. “Judge Gogichaishvili did not satisfy the application of the Kakheti regional persecutor several days ago and replaced pretrial 2-month detention  of Kote Kapanadze, activist of the New Rights, with 20 000 GEL bail” it was written in the article. The Council of Justice states the information in the article is unreal. Here is the official comment of the Council of Justice on the article provided by the press-center of the Supreme Council of the Justice.

Reply of the Supreme Council of Justice of Georgia

Completely groundless article about the Supreme Council of Justice was published on the online newspaper of the Human Rights Center www.humanrights.ge and in the printed newspaper “Alia”, edition N 83 of July 18-20, 2009.

The Council of Justice replies to the abovementioned media sources and clarifies that discussion of the sentence of the accused Kote Kapanadze was not reason for the disciplinary persecution of Giorgi Gogichashvili.

Statements of the attorneys and other people published in the online and printed newspapers are groundless and unhealthy criticism to the justice.”

Comment of the Author on the Reply of the Council of the Justice

Author of the article Gela Mtivlishvili: “we received information on disciplinary persecution of the judge from several reliable sources who preferred to stay anonymous. Besides that, we checked the information with the spokesperson of the Supreme Court of Georgia Nana Vasadze and she neither confirmed nor denied the information. She said the information about disciplinary persecution is confidential and it shall not be reported to media sources or other interested people.”

The comments recorded by Gela Mtivlishvili express the attitude of concrete respondents to the fact and none of them demonstrates the position of the Human Rights Center or the author of the article.
