Lecturers at Telavi Unversity Remained Unemployed

November 6, 2009

Gela Mtivlishvili, Kakheti

Three lecturers remained unemployed at Telavi Iakob Gogebashvili University. One of them Eldino Jangulashvili states she had not worked at the university to make money and did not obey the illegal orders of the administration. For this reason she had controversy with the rector Giorgi Gotsiridze and his brother Paata Gotsiridze who is head of legal department of the university.

Eldino Jangulashvili, Zizi Loria and Mediko Metreveli lost job after the competition. The competition for academician positions at Telavi State University was held on September 10.

“I submitted an application to the university on August 31, 2009 attached with documents. According to the resolution, three days later the corresponding department checks the validity of submitted documents. If some faults are discovered, the department is entitled to inform the applicant about it. However, I was not informed about it at all. At the competition I was told I had not submitted every required document. Only 4 lecturers had submitted applications for the position of assistant-professor. The competition was carried out through violation. More precisely, in accordance to the Article 2 of the resolution, the academician positions can be occupied only through public competition in comply with principles of transparency, equality and fair competition. Premeditatedly selected candidates were interviewed in secret in the office of the rector,” said Zizi Loria.

Professor Eldino Jangulashvili also speaks about violations in the competition. “We knew they had premeditatedly agreed who would be fired and who would be accepted. Anyway we applied for the competition. Rector Giorgi Gotsiridze and other members of the administration cannot stand us because we do not make money at the university. We have informed the law enforcement bodies about the corruption at the university several times. I cannot evaluate the work of students who do not attend lectures throughout the term and the administration orders us to put marks to them at the end of the term,” said Eldino Jangulashvili. She worked at the local human rights organization simultaneously.

Unemployed lecturers request to annul the decree of the rector based on which they lost their jobs. They appeal to the Public Defender’s Office and other human rights organizations for help.

Paata Gotsiridze, lawyer of the university, states their accusations are groundless. He said Loria, Jangulashvili and Metreveli did not satisfy the requirements of the competition.
