National Communications Commission Requested Cable TV Companies to Cease Broadcasting of Russian “Euro News “and Armenian TV-Channel

“National Communications Commission requested cable companies to cease broadcasting of the Russian and Armenian TV Channels – “Euro news”, several Russian musical TV Channels and an Armenian TV Channel”, reported newspaper “Resonance” in the article “Russian “Euro News” and Armenian TV Company Are Requested to Be Cut Off” , Communications Commission offered “new rules of game” to the cable channels.

“The commission gave friendly suggestions to 50 members of the Union of Cable TV Networks membership and requests to cease broadcasting of the abovementioned channels. According to the fact that the Union has some problems in regard with broadcasting of unlicensed channels, they have two weeks to eradicate those problems. If they keep promise, the commission shall remain blind about those unlicensed broadcasting. Giorgi Ratishvili, the head of regulating  department of the Commission stated that it cannot be profitable for cable TV Companies either to broadcast foreign channels without license and finally it will damage them”, it is mentioned in the article.

At the meeting they also discussed 1000 USD, which was requested by cable TV channels for re-broadcasting of Georgian National Channels. Ratishvili inquired, if Union members knew about this fact. They also spoke that the Commission will remain blind about re-broadcasting of several channels. For example, they will not turn off “NTV plus Football”, “NTV Kino-Hit” and “NTV Premier”. Besides that, the commission suggests operators of cable channels to list those channels which will replace Russian ones in future. Ratishvili stated if cable operators breach the agreement they will start different game then.”

“Ratishvili mentioned several undesirable channels at the meeting. Among them were Russian “Euro News” and Armenian News Channel. Though, he did not mention the exact name of the later.”Musical Channels, where Abkhazia and South Ossetia are recognized as independent states and where people are sending appreciation messages to them, are not desirable ones for our population. Also, news in Russian and original languages on “Euro News” are different, because Russian version is worked out in their Moscow office. It is not difficult to replace the Russian “Euro News” by the French one,” stated Ratishvili. According to him, specific rules will be common for everyone, which should be strictly followed. The Communications Commission gives two weeks term to cable operators to make changes in their contracts”, writes Giorgi Putkaradze, the author of the article.
