Kvemo Kartli Region before Elections – Scarified Election Banners, Rapidly Changeable Opposition Feelings…

May 17, 2010
Manon Bokuchava, Kvemo Kartli

Next day, members of the Christian-Democrat Party found their election banner scarified in the 7th micro district of Rustavi. “The banners with our candidate in this district Giorgi Melikidze were torn down and scarified next day. It is uncivilized form of fight. If somebody thinks that by similar actions our rating will fall in this city, he is very mistaken,” said the head of the Rustavi office of the Christian-Democrats Aleko Akhvlediani.

Single mandate candidate of the Christian-Democrat Party, whose banner was damaged, complains that it is second incident. He had paid his own money for the banner.

“The same happened in the 8th micro-district. There, we talked with the person who did it; he confessed he had done it in favor of the National Movement. We asked him to return at least the banner but he said they had already torn it.”

The members of Noghaideli’s party in Kvemo Kartli region have different problems. Representative of the Movement for the Just Georgia in the region Nukri Shatirishvili speaks about the oppression on their single mandate candidate in Bolnisi.

“Bolnisi district deputy governor Ramin Asadov oppresses the local population. As a result of his direct threats, our candidate Bairam Tanirverdov refused to be candidate for the municipal board on the last day. He was our candidate in the Akaurta municipal board in Bolnisi district. We think, everything happened according to the orders of the former prosecutor and current district governor. The same happened in Bolnisi district in regard with our representative Shakro Pruidze. His son was lately released from prison and he was threatened with sending him back to the detention setting,” said Shatirishvili.

Head of the Rustavi office of the Republic Party Nino Lomidze requests the society to pay attention to the number of voters.

Lomidze said that in April the number of voters in Rustavi was 98 786 but now, one month later it has increased up to 105 990. “The number of voters has increased at 7 000. Is it logical?”

Head of the election commission in Rustavi election district # 20 Soso Shvelidze explained the fact by leaving the voters who are abroad on the election list. “Initially they said we had to remove the citizens who are abroad from the list though they are registered here. Finally the CEC made final fair decision to leave them in the list. Thus, we received increased number of voters,” said Shvelidze.

According to the CEC, by May 12, 37 000 voters are abroad throughout Georgia. If we agree that the election list in Rustavi was increased only by these people, that means 7 204 out of the total 37 000 voters are from Rustavi.

Various parties often complain about violations during the pre-election campaign. The political party By Ourselves does not complain at all. Furthermore, despite their less noisy work in Rustavi, they have 14 secretaries in the election commissions in Rustavi.

“It is absurd to claim that we have made a deal with the ruling party regarding the secretaries and that we will act in favor of the National Movement. However, we are not radical people. We have normal cooperation with both opposition and ruling parties,” said the head of the Kvemo Kartli region office of the party Tamaz Kalichava.

Kalichava was asked how he evaluates the activities of the government in the region. “There might be some faults but everything can be improved. Our aim is to come to the authority and contribute to the general work.”
