Labor Party, Conservative Party and Party “Freedom” Join Requests of the Public Orthodox Movement

June 7, 2010

“I am also Orthodox! Come and arrest me!!!” – Public Orthodox Movement (POM) organized a demonstration-briefing at the office of the Liberty Institute on June 3. Their main requests were the release of their members, who were arrested on May 7, and the abolishment of the Liberty Institute.

“We appeal to the Patriarch to interfere in our problem and assist us in the release of the boys who are prisoners of the Liberty Institute,” said the member of the youth branch of the political party Tavisupleba Lado Sadghobelashvili.

The members of the youth branches of the political parties – Labor Party, Conservative party, “Freedom” and “Victory”, members of the non-governmental organizations – Egalitarian Institute, Society of King Erekle II, youth movements “No” and “Go Forward” took part in the demonstration.

Their statement – “Persecuted for Orthodox Faith” – states: “Liberty Institute has acquired the functions of Neron and Jalal ad-Din. Like Neron, the members of this dark organization spread various slander about Christian people; they persecute and imprison them; like Jalal ad-Din, by the sacrilegious book of Erekle Deisadze, they put icons of God Mother and Christ in front of Georgian people and offered to step on them.”

The demonstrators called the members of the Liberty Institute “mistaken brothers”. “In accordance with the Christian moral, we hate neither Erekle Deisadze nor the members of the Liberty Institute. We do not think they are our enemies; we think they are our mistaken brothers. They are our compatriots and we are sorry for them. We dislike the sin, atheism, their hatred towards Orthodox faith and their fight against the homeland. Thus, we call upon Deisadze and other members of the Liberty Institute to leave and abolish this anti-Christian organization,” statement of the demonstrators.

At the briefing, the members of the POM stated that they intend to send petitions to the president of Georgia, chairperson of the parliament of Georgia and Patriarch of Georgia where they will request the release of their members and prohibition the activities of the Liberty Institute.

Supporters of the Liberty Institute did not attend the demonstration which lasted for half an hour without incidents.

On May 7, 2010 the TV-Company Kavkasia had a live discussion of the book of Erekle Deisadze (the book has insulting name for the Last Supper); it ended with a quarrel between representatives of the Union of Orthodox Parents and Public Orthodox Movement and their opponents. After the incident, the law enforcement officers arrested 7 people suspected in violence
