June 23, 2010
Madlen Macharashvili, “New 7 Days”

The administration of the president of Georgia tries to hush up the visit of the president in the United Arab Emirates and his meeting with the representatives of the company “Etisalat.” There is assumption that the main reason of the president’s visit in the Emirates was to get information about the technologies which provide the access to the confidential information from the mobile phones without special sanctions.

“We neither deny nor confirm the information,” it was reply of the public relation department of the president’s administration to our question whether president Saakashvili visited United Arab Emirates on June 20.

Georgian national TV-Companies did not report about the visit of the president at all. Only foreign media-sources spread information about it. Dubaichronicle.com reports that on June 20 Mikheil Saakashvili visited the United Arab Emirates together with the delegation. Online website http://www.emiratesweek.net/2010/06/1462 reports that president of Georgia and Georgian delegation met the manager-general of the Tele-Communication Company “Etisalat” Ahmed An Jarvan.

The company representatives appreciated the visit of the president of Georgia and pointed out that at the meeting the goals of the company and the company development were discussed. On the other hand, Saakashvili also expressed his happiness for the visit in the company which produces modern technologies. “We are excited by having chance to have discussion with the producers of the modern technologies. “Etisalat” is the infrastructure of the world value and it is known as an organization with successful strategy.”

The Company “Etisalat” works in 18 countries of the Middle East, Asia and Africa; 107 million out of 2 billion population of these countries are customers of the company.

Short time ago, the Tele-Communication Company “Etisalat” was involved in scandal. On July 8 2009, the company installed such a program in its network which provides access into mobile phones. Research in Motion (RiM) – Branch Company of the famous BlackBerry – published conclusion that with the support of the new technique “Etisalat” was able to get confidential information from mobile phones and to control it.

The official information about the visit of the president of Georgia in the Emirates is not published on the website of the president. It provides information only about his visit in the Emirates a year ago.

Mikheil Saakashvili visited the United Arab Emirates on March 1, 2009 too. According to the information published on the official website of the president, the aim of the visit was to attract investments to Georgia.

According to the same information, the member of the royal family of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Nahian met him in the Abu Dhabi Airport.  The Sheikh personally accompanied the president Saakashvili by his car during the entire visit. During the visit, Mikheil Saakashvili met prime-minister, foreign minister, ministries of infrastructure and education. The parties agreed that citizens of Georgia will be able to visit the Emirates without visa.

The president of Georgia also visited Ras Al-Haim Emirate which made investment in the free economic zone of Poti – in Poti port and constructs huge shopping center in the entrance of Tbilisi. The Company also funds the TV-Company Imedi and construction of Mtatsminda Park in Tbilisi.

Because of the world economical crisis the economics of the United Arab Emirates were seriously damaged. It hindered the investment process in many countries. Despite that, Mikheil Saakashvili was promised that their investments in Georgia will not only continue but will also increase.

The recent visit of the president of Georgia in the Emirates was continuation of the economical diplomacy.
