Statement by Kmara ("Enough") on arrest of its activists in Batumi, Adjara

 

On January 6, at approximately 22:00 without proper sanction and with violation of number of laws, representatives of Ajara Autonomous Republic Security Ministry detained Kmara activists and their family members. Namely, Levan Chkartishvili and his father Romeo Chkhartishvili; Irakli Khajomia and his father Merab Khajomia. Approximately 15 individuals have been detained with identities of most of them still not known.

 

Activists of Kmara Ajara organisation had started putting up posters and distributing leaflets with slogans "Enough Abashidze's dictatorship!" "Enough!, because I love Georiga" and demands to turn on Rustavi2 in the region.

 

Ajara authorities, also without proper sanction conducted search of the activists' houses and with methods characteristic to dictatorial regimes—which Aslan Abashidze's government is—"found" weapons and narcotics. They also did not allow lawyers of the Young Lawyers' Association Ajara branch to meet with their clients.

 

Youth Movement Kmara demands immediate release of its activists and their family members from illegal detention.

 

Kmara also calls upon the Georgian government and international community to react to this act of violation of human rights by authorities of Ajara Autonomous Republic.
